This weekend sees the start of Scotland's Highland Gathering and Games Season. This is a welcome return for these iconic events which have not been able to take place for the last two years due to the restrictions of the Covid Pandemic.
The Games at Gourock this weekend is the traditional opener of the Season which runs through the Summer months, culminating with the famous Braemar Gathering held on the first Saturday of September. Whilst this Gathering can be regarded as the most prestigious with the Royal Family as its patrons, games and gatherings are important cultural events across many of Scotland's smaller towns and an open invitation for both local and overseas tourists to visit.
The Gatherings combine Sports and Music in a uniquely Scottish way. Set to a background of Tartan, Athletes, Dancers, Pipers and guests compete in such varied disciplines as Tossing the Caber, the Sword dance and the sack race all accompanied by the noise and colour of massed Pipe bands.
We have prepared a Calendar of over 60 of the Key Games and Gatherings that will take place this coming Summer to allow you to plan your visit to one of them and ensure that this fabulous Scottish Tradition thrives again. As well as the dates of each event we have provided you with entry costs and, where its exists, a website link for each one. The information we have provided may well change so we strongly recommend that you always check on any changes that may occur prior to the day of the event. Some of the larger events will require purchasing tickets in advance online - especially where they have grandstands but generally there are always tickets for ground passes available to buy on the day.
