At the time of Thomas Penant's trip to Scotland the North of Britain was virtually "terra incognita" to teh Southerner. His account of his travels to Scotland became a best seller at the time of their publication and it has since become much reprinted book.
His trip began in Berwick then to Edinburgh through what was Perthshire to Elgin and Inverness and reaching Caithness before returning to Inverness and following the Great Glen down into Argyll and to Inveraray and finally along Loch Lomond to Glasgow.
