  • Synopsis

The Moine geological theory relates to the Moine Supergroup, a series of highly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found in the Scottish Highlands. These rocks, primarily composed of quartzites, schists, and gneisses, were originally deposited as sediments around 1,000 to 870 million years ago and were later subjected to intense metamorphism during the Caledonian Orogeny (about 470–420 million years ago). The Moine Thrust, a major geological structure, marks the boundary where these ancient rocks were pushed westward over younger sedimentary layers, playing a crucial role in understanding mountain-building processes.
