  • Synopsis

"Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie" is a firsthand account of the life and achievements of Andrew Carnegie, one of the most influential industrialists and philanthropists of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Published posthumously in 1920 by Houghton Mifflin Company, the book traces Carnegie’s journey from his humble beginnings in Dunfermline, Scotland, to his rise as a titan of the American steel industry.

Carnegie details his immigration to the United States as a child, his early work as a telegraph operator, and his eventual success in the steel industry, where he pioneered cost-efficient production techniques. His business acumen led to the creation of Carnegie Steel Company, which he later sold to J.P. Morgan in 1901, making him one of the wealthiest men of his time.

A significant portion of the autobiography is dedicated to Carnegie’s belief in philanthropy, inspired by his famous essay "The Gospel of Wealth." He outlines his commitment to giving away his fortune for the betterment of society, funding libraries, educational institutions, and cultural organizations worldwide.

The book also reflects on Carnegie’s views on business ethics, labor relations, and world peace, offering insight into his complex legacy. While celebrated for his charitable contributions, his role in the 1892 Homestead Strike remains controversial.

This autobiography serves as both a personal memoir and a historical document, capturing the mindset of one of America’s most prominent self-made men.
