Donald Dinnie (1837-1916) was a prominent Scottish sportsman who excelled in various athletic disciplines, particularly in the Highland Games. He was born on September 27, 1837, in Balnacraig, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Dinnie gained fame and recognition for his exceptional strength and athletic prowess. His most renowned achievement was in the field of stone lifting, where he became legendary for his ability to lift and carry the Dinnie Stones. These stones, weighing approximately 332.5 kg (733 pounds) and 414.5 kg (914 pounds), were located in Potarch, Aberdeenshire. Dinnie's feat of carrying them across the width of the Potarch Bridge earned him widespread acclaim and made him an iconic figure in the world of strength sports.

Apart from stone lifting, Dinnie participated in various other Highland Games events, including throwing the hammer, tossing the caber, and shot putting. He consistently showcased his strength and skill, winning numerous competitions throughout his career.

Dinnie's athletic prowess extended beyond the Highland Games. He also excelled in wrestling, winning several championships and earning a reputation as a formidable opponent. His competitive spirit and dedication to sports made him a beloved figure among spectators and fellow athletes alike.

After retiring from active competition, Dinnie remained involved in the sports community, promoting Highland Games and serving as a judge and referee for various events. He passed away on July 2, 1916, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of Scotland's greatest sportsmen.

Today, Donald Dinnie is celebrated as a symbol of Scottish strength and athleticism. His name is synonymous with the Dinnie Stones and the remarkable display of strength associated with their lifting and carrying.
