  • Synopsis

The Scottish Potato Famine of 1846–1847 was a devastating agricultural disaster that primarily affected the Highlands and western regions of Scotland. It was triggered by a severe outbreak of potato blight (Phytophthora infestans), the same disease that caused the Great Irish Famine. Potatoes were a staple food for much of Scotland’s rural population, particularly in the Highlands, where subsistence farming was common due to poor soil and harsh conditions.

When the potato crops failed, widespread hunger ensued, exacerbated by pre-existing economic hardships. The situation was made worse by the ongoing Highland Clearances, where many tenant farmers had already been displaced or forced onto small, unproductive plots of land. Unlike in Ireland, the Scottish famine did not result in the same catastrophic loss of life, but it did accelerate emigration, with thousands leaving for North America and Australia in search of a better life.

Relief efforts, including those from the British government and private charities, were often inadequate or mismanaged. Work schemes and soup kitchens were introduced, but many Highlanders were forced to rely on landlords, some of whom helped their tenants, while others used the crisis as an opportunity to evict them.

The famine had a lasting impact on Scotland, hastening the decline of Gaelic culture and deepening the depopulation of the Highlands. It remains a key event in Scottish history, highlighting the vulnerability of subsistence farming communities and the harsh realities of 19th-century economic policies.
