  • Synopsis

James Hutton (1726–1797) was a Scottish geologist, chemist, and naturalist, widely regarded as the "Father of Modern Geology." Born in Edinburgh, he initially studied medicine but later shifted his focus to agriculture and natural sciences. His keen observations of rock formations and landscapes led him to develop the concept of uniformitarianism, which proposed that the Earth's geological features were shaped by continuous, natural processes over vast periods rather than sudden catastrophic events.

Hutton's most significant contribution to geology was his theory of deep time, which suggested that the Earth was much older than previously thought. In his seminal work, Theory of the Earth (published in 1788), he argued that geological changes occurred through slow and gradual processes such as erosion, sedimentation, and volcanic activity, a principle later summarized as "the present is the key to the past."

His ideas laid the foundation for modern geological science and influenced later scientists, including Charles Lyell and Charles Darwin. Hutton's observations at locations like Siccar Point in Scotland provided compelling evidence for his theories, cementing his legacy in the field of geology.
