  • Synopsis

The Robert Burns Exhibition of 1896 was a major cultural event held in Glasgow, Scotland, to commemorate the life and work of the famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns. The exhibition was held at the Corporation Galleries in Sauchiehall Street, and ran from May to October of that year.

The exhibition featured a wide range of displays and artifacts relating to Burns and his work, including manuscripts, portraits, personal belongings, and other memorabilia. The exhibits were loaned from a variety of sources, including the Burns family, private collectors, and museums across Scotland and the UK.

Some of the highlights of the exhibition included an original manuscript of Burns' famous poem "To a Mouse," a lock of his hair, and a rare first edition of his collected works. There were also numerous paintings and sketches of Burns, as well as a reconstruction of his study at Ellisland Farm, where he lived and worked for several years.

The exhibition was a huge success, attracting over 100,000 visitors during its six-month run, and helping to cement Burns' status as one of Scotland's greatest cultural icons. Today, many of the items displayed at the exhibition are housed at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway, Ayrshire.
