  • Synopsis

The small, diamond-shaped island of Pabay, located in Skye’s Inner Sound just 2.5 miles from Broadford, is steeped in history and spirituality. Named from the Norse papa-ey or "island of the priest," it has long been regarded as a place of wonder. Early holy men built a chapel on the island, and 19th-century geologists Hugh Miller and Archibald Geikie marveled at its fossil-laden shales, which offered insights into Creation.

In 1950, Len and Margaret Whatley left their urban life in Birmingham for the solitude of Pabay, living there until 1970. Their bold move to an uninhabited island brought immense challenges and rewards. Christopher Whatley, their nephew and frequent visitor, draws on archival research, oral histories, and personal experiences in his book to recount the island’s history and the lives of those who called it home. Through this vivid exploration, he captures the hardships and joys of life on this remote Hebridean jewel.
