Sir Charles Lyell, 1st Baronet, FRS ( 1797 – 1875) was a Scottish geologist and considered as one of the pioneers of Modern Geology He was a close friend of Charles Darwin and he examines the power of known natural causes in explaining the earth's history.
Provenance of this copy - S. D. Titmas, Charterhouse 1874 (signatures on front free endpapers). Samuel David Titmas (1848-94), taught science at Charterhouse and he was also an Anglican clergyman and a Fellow of the Linnaean Society.
