A late Victorian silver & horn Quaich with Gaelic motto 'SGUAB AS.I'
A 19th century (Victorian) Scottish cow horn Quaich with a silver inlaid medallion at the
centre of the bowl engraved with Gaelic motto 'SGUAB AS'I' meaning 'quaff it' or 'drink up'. The
two handles are each mounted with an engraved silver thistle. on the left and cross on the right. There are no hallmarks as was common in provincial Victorian Scotland.

The word Quaich comes form the Gaelic word "cuach" (cup or bowl). It is often referred to as a friendship or love cup generally with two handles although 3 or 4 handle quaiches have been made. Sharing the cup demonstrates a trust between 2 individuals or groups of people. You can fill the cup with a drink of your choice however it is usually whisky.
