  • About the Author

    Joseph Robertson was a Scottish historian born in 1810 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh and became a prolific writer and scholar of Scottish history.

     

    Robertson's most famous work is his three-volume history of Scotland during the reigns of Mary Queen of Scots and James VI, which was published in the mid-19th century. The work is considered a definitive account of this period of Scottish history and remains a valuable resource for scholars today.

     

    Robertson was also an expert in Scottish genealogy and published a number of works on this subject. He was a member of the Bannatyne Club, a society devoted to the study of Scottish history and literature, and edited a number of its publications.

     

    In addition to his historical work, Robertson was also a prominent figure in Scottish public life. He was a member of the Edinburgh City Council and served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1865 to 1868. He was also a member of the Scottish Episcopal Church and served as its historian.

     

    Robertson died in 1866 at the age of 56, but his work continues to be highly regarded in the field of Scottish history. His papers and manuscripts are held at the National Library of Scotland and his legacy as a leading Scottish historian is still recognized today.

  • Provenance

    Originally from the library of Mr James Gibson Hamilton Starke of Troqueer Holm in Dumfries (1837-1908). Educated at Edinburgh University, he was called to the Scottish bar in 1862. He was a lberal and an important figure in in Dumfries and Galloway. His Book plate can be found on the inside left end-paper.

  • Condition Notes

    Generally in good condition there is some wear and tear to the spine at topa nd bottom and some stains on the front board. The binding is slightly cockec overall but still remains good and the inside pages are bright and clean throughout.
