About the Author
William Dunbar (c. 1460-c. 1520) is considered one of the greatest poets of the Scottish Renaissance. Not much is known about Dunbar's life, but he was likely born in or near Edinburgh and was educated at the University of St. Andrews.
Dunbar was a member of the court of King James IV of Scotland and was appointed court poet in 1501. He wrote a variety of poems, including allegories, ballads, and satirical works, and was known for his skillful use of language and his ability to evoke vivid imagery.
Dunbar's most famous work is "The Tua Mariit Wemen and the Wedo," a satirical poem that criticizes the greed and immorality of the clergy. The poem is notable for its use of vernacular Scots language, which Dunbar helped to develop as a literary language in Scotland.
Other notable works by Dunbar include "The Golden Targe," a dream allegory, and "Lament for the Makaris," a poem that mourns the death of many Scottish poets of Dunbar's time.
Hugh MacDiarmid is considered one of Scotland's greatest 20th century poets and literary figures.
