The Annals of the Parish and The Ayrshire Legatees

These two volumes comprise two early 19th century novels:

Annals of the Parish by John Galt is a novel of Scottish country life published in 1821. It is written as a first-person account by Micah Balwhidder, the minister of a rural parish called Dalmailing, from 1760 to 1810. The novel depicts the social and economic changes that affect the parish and its inhabitants during the Industrial Revolution, such as the introduction of new crops, machines, roads, and trade. The novel also portrays the personal and professional life of Balwhidder, his family, his parishioners, and his neighbours, with humour and realism

The Ayrshire Legatees by John Galt is a novel of Scottish humour published in 1820. It is written as a series of letters by the members of the Pringle family, who inherit a fortune from their cousin, Colonel Armour, in India. The novel follows their journey from their rural home in Ayrshire to London and then to Paris, where they encounter various adventures and misfortunes. The novel satirizes the Scottish character, the social customs of the time, and the effects of wealth and travel on provincial minds

John Galt (1779-1839) was a Scottish novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator. He is considered the first political novelist in the English language, as he wrote about the issues of the Industrial Revolution and its impact on rural Scotland. He was also involved in various business ventures, such as founding the city of Guelph in Canada and working as an agent for the Canada Company. He wrote more than 40 books

These two novels were part of a new edition of the works of John Galt published by William Blackwood and Sons.

They are introduced by the author S. R. Crockett and have illustrations by John Wallace. There is a frontispiece portrait engraving of teh author.

These are two fine volumes with good bindings and clean cover boards with just some bumping around the edges and at the corners. The inside pages are clean and bright throughout with tissue guards in place for the illustrations and top gilt edge paper.

There is a previous owner name Boyd and date 1895 in ink on volume I on inside end-paper.
