    This is one of the most famous and classic Victorian Horticultural works published in 2 volumes:

    Volume 1 - Focuses on garden Structural elements of gardening. 776 pages including index: 1073 illustrations: 34 full-page plates engraved on copper

    Volume 2  - Focuses on the cultural and growing elements of gardening. 867 pages including an index : 279 illustrations

    About the author:

    Charles M'Intosh, (1794 -1864) was born at Abercairney near Crieff, in Perthshire where his father was a gardener and forester. He followed in his footsteps and after spending some time in the gardens at Abercairney he was taken to London by the celebrated garden architect Mr. Lewis Kennedy. In London he met Mr. Thos. Ingram, Her Majesty's Gardener at Windsor, and the friendship  endured to his death at his residence in Murrayfield near Edinburgh in January 1864. He worked both in Scotland (Taymouth and Dalkeith Castle) as well as in England and his greatest acheivement was probablt this work - The Book of the Garden.

  • Condition Notes

    These are two immense volumes - close to 2000 pages and thsi copy has been well used and has therfore some important degrading around the cover boards which has resulted in some looseness of the binding. However the inside pages are all present including pull out plates (theres is No plate 22 as mentioned in the book contents and plate 29 does appear to be missing).

    This book belonged to John Lorna Stewart with his signature and date July 12th 1858 on the inside of Volume 2 end paper.
