Synopsis
James McBey (1883-1959) was a Scottish artist and etcher known for his depictions of landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes. He was born in the small fishing village of Newburgh in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and began his career as an apprentice to a local printmaker at the age of 14.
In 1902, McBey moved to Edinburgh to study art at the Royal Scottish Academy. After completing his studies, he traveled extensively, visiting Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. These travels had a significant influence on his work, and he often depicted exotic and far-flung locales in his etchings and paintings.
During World War I, McBey served as an official war artist, producing a series of etchings and paintings that captured the devastation of the Western Front. After the war, he moved to London, where he continued to work as a professional artist, producing a wide range of prints, watercolors, and oil paintings.
McBey's work was widely exhibited and collected during his lifetime, and he received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the art world. In 1958, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to art. Today, his work can be found in major collections around the world, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Scotland.
