  • Synopsis

The Entail or the lairds of Grippy by John Galt is a novel of Scottish realism published in 1823. It is a dark and tragic story of obsession, greed, and family inheritance. It follows the lives of three generations of the Walkinshaw family, who are cursed by the entail (a legal device that prevents the division of property) imposed by their patriarch, Walter Walkinshaw, a Glasgow merchant. The novel depicts the effects of the entail on the family members, who are either driven to madness, poverty, or death by their father’s or grandfather’s tyranny. The novel is a critique of the Scottish society and economy of the time, and a warning against the dangers of excessive ambition and materialism.
