  • Additional Product Information

There have been many books written about the Highlands. The text for this book was first conceived back in the late 1950's by Calum Maclean and the first published in 1959. He was a Higlander writing from the inside and there has not been many. The book was a success but was deemed political and controversial and no further editions appeared. It briefly appeared in print again in 1975 thanks to the Inverness-based Club Leabhar.

It was finally reprinted in a new eidtion in 1990 with new photography from Calum Maclean's nephew Cailean Maclean and with poetry and an introduction from one of Scotland's greatest 20th century poets - Sorley Maclean.

As the book points out the concern was not so much for places, beauty-spots and scenery, as with the Highlanders in their own self-created environment. He suggests the uniqueness in the world of the Highland culture and that if lost it could never be recovered.
