John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854) was a Scottish writer, critic, and biographer. He was born in the town of Cambusnethan in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and was educated at the University of Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford.

Lockhart is best known for his literary criticism and biographical works. He was a prominent contributor to Blackwood's Magazine, a leading literary periodical of the time, and his reviews and essays were widely respected for their insight and wit. He also wrote several biographies, including a highly-regarded life of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, as well as works on other notable figures of the day, such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Sir Walter Scott.

In addition to his literary pursuits, Lockhart was also a successful lawyer, and he served as the editor of the influential Quarterly Review from 1825 to 1853. He was married to the novelist and diarist, J.G. (or Jane) Wilson, who wrote under the pseudonym "Christopher North." The couple had five children, including the noted art critic and historian, Walter Armstrong.

Lockhart's writing and criticism were influential in shaping the literary culture of his time, and his biographical works remain important sources for scholars and enthusiasts of Scottish literature and history.

This limited edition is a  fine set of 2 volumes with original dustcovers taht have ensured the velum and cloth cover boards have remained in excellent condition. There are some tears and some general dis-colouration to the dustcovers - they are now safely behind film covers.

Inside both volumes are in bright and clean throughout.
