"The National Burns", edited by Rev. George Gilfillan was originally published by William Mackenzie of Glasgow and contained "The airs of all the songs and an original life of Burns by the editor". It was also illustrated throughout, both by engraved plates and within the text. It was published in 15 parts, costing two shillings each making it an affordable way for people to purchase the complete works of Robert Burns.
Rev. George Gilfillan of Dundee was a leading figure in the Burns movement in the latter part of the nineteenth century. He was instrumental in having the statue of Robert Burns by Sir John Steel erected in Albert Square, Dundee.
He edited several editions of the Burns' work and wrote a biography of the poet, which was published in "The National Burns" shortly after his death in 1878.
Condition Notes
This is an extremely large volume - over 3kg in weight housed in a 3/4 leather binding with gilt titles and thistle decoration on the spine. There is some splitting of the leather at the top and bottom of the front board however the book remains in good working order .
The inside pages have marbled edges and although tanned (due to natural aging) throughout remain clean and bright.
