The native pinewoods are one of the most important living historical monuments of Scotland. This book discusses these pinewoods from historical, ecological and forestry points of view.

The History of the native woods from late glacial times to the present day is traced with an outline from archeaoloigical amd historical sources showing the impact of man upon the forests of Scotland.

The ecology of the surviving native pinewoods is decribed in detail. Among the topics dealt with are the relationship between the pinewoods and other woodland communities, the tree species and larger shrubs, the field communities, age structure, growth and stocking, pathegenic fungi and fauna. The problem of the natural regeneration of the pine is also discussed.
