Additional Product Information
Scotland is often associated with the mythical creature, the unicorn. The use of the unicorn as a symbol in Scotland dates back to the 12th century and has been a part of the country's history and culture ever since. The unicorn is considered a national symbol of Scotland and is depicted on Scotland's coat of arms.
The unicorn is a powerful and magical creature, and it was believed to have special healing powers. This made it an important symbol for the Scots, who saw the unicorn as a symbol of purity, innocence, and grace. In the Middle Ages, the unicorn was a popular subject in art and literature, and it was often depicted in tapestries and paintings.
In the 16th century, King James VI of Scotland added the unicorn to the royal coat of arms of Scotland. This made the unicorn an official symbol of Scotland and solidified its place as a national icon. Today, the unicorn can be seen on various flags, coats of arms, and other symbols throughout Scotland, and it is a popular subject in Scottish folklore and mythology.
Lisa Gotfresden has written a wide-ranging cultural history of the Unicorn using pictorial art as the scarlet thread that draws together her work on the myth.
