About the Author
The Rev. Alexander Stewart (1847-1915) was a Scottish minister, scholar and author who was the principal of St Andrews University and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1911. He was born in Moulin, Perthshire, and studied at Aberdeen and Glasgow. He was ordained in 1872 and served as a minister in various parishes in Scotland. He was also a professor of biblical criticism and apologetics at St Andrews University from 1897 to 1915. He wrote several books on theology, history and natural history, including The Life of Christ (1891) and Handbook of Christian Evidences (1895). He was a respected and influential figure in the Scottish church and academia.

Ramage Book binding company was a British firm of bookbinders founded by John Ramage (1836-1911) in the late 19th century. Ramage was trained in Edinburgh and Paris and became known for his fine bindings in the French style, using crushed morocco leather, gilt tooling, silk endpapers and doublures1. He worked for many distinguished clients, including Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, Gladstone and Tennyson. He also bound several books by Thomas Hardy, such as Selected Poems. Ramage’s bindings are highly valued by collectors and can be found in libraries such as the British Library.

This rare Ramage bound book is in excellent condition throughout with gandsome Gilt titles, marbled paper covered boards and inside end papers and top gilt edged paper.
