Scotland experienced significant economic transformation during the Victorian era (1837–1901), becoming one of the most industrialized nations in the world.
Perthshire lay at the crossroads of the new industrialised central built and the more rural and sparsely populated Highlands. Its bucolic beauty attracted the wealthy city-dwellers as well as Royalty with Queen Victoria a frequent visitor.
Photography played a crucial role in documenting the Victorian era in Scotland, capturing the rapid industrial, social, and cultural changes of the time. As the technology developed from the 1840s onward, early Scottish photographers such as David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson pioneered the use of calotype photography, creating invaluable portraits of people from various social backgrounds, from working-class fishermen to aristocrats.
